Understanding varicose and spider veins
Varicose veins and spider veins begin to develop when tiny valves within our veins become weak. Typically these valves work within the veins to push blood from the legs back to the heart, while blood is re-circulated through the body. When veins lose elasticity due to age, or circulation is reduced due to conditions such as pregnancy, blood in the veins may begin to flow in the wrong direction and then pool and become stagnant in areas. This causes veins to dilate, swell and become varicose. Like varicose veins, spider veins can be caused by swelling, but also may be due to changes in hormone levels, injuries or even sun damage.
What causes varicose veins can vary from genetics and age, to pregnancy or simply being overweight. They can even be due to having a job that has you on your feet for long hours.
Varicose vein treatment methods
After going over your medical history, discussing your symptoms and performing a thorough examination and testing, Dr. Karamanoukian will develop a varicose vein treatment plan to effectively eliminate your spider and varicose veins.
Some treatment options include: foam sclerotherapy (a fast, pain-free and non-invasive spider vein treatment procedure), endovenous laser treatment (also known as EVLT, a minimally invasive procedure to eliminate unsightly varicose veins and help with circulation issues), and microphlebectomy (where large, bulging and varicose veins are removed from the legs).
